San Francisco East Bay and San Francisco Bay Area CodePINK Women for Peace CodePINK Actions

October 26th, four of us from Bay Area CodePINK National Guard Working Group met with Assemblywoman Loni Hancock in her El Cerrito office. The purpose of the meeting was to review how many co-authors she has for the Resolution AJR36, which Assembly members are still on the fence, or openly opposed, and how we can help her get the number of co-authors needed (41) for the Resolution to be introduced and passed in January.

After reviewing the list of holdouts, we asked for her advice on how to proceed from here. Loni said that our work with City Councils, Mayors, etc. is very helpful, and important, but the urgent need now is for constituents to call their Assembly members.

Now is the time to urge support of AJR36! Since many of you have been asking for guidance, we hope this will be useful.

Loni and her staff stressed over and over that the pressure must come from the constituents in each District. We learned that it only takes 5 calls on one subject -- as long as they are from constituents -- to get the attention of the Assemblyperson.

The most effective means of contacting the office, in order of impact:

  1. Phone call.
  2. Personal letter sent in an envelope
  3. Fax
  4. Lowest of the low, email. Emails are ignored. Thousands of form e-letters flood the offices. The Assemblyperson never sees them.

ACTION ALERT: What you can do ASAP

Call your state assemblyperson TODAY at their DISTRICT OFFICE.

  1. State you are from the relevant district and ask to speak to the assemblyperson. (ask to speak to the chief of staff if the assembly person is not available.)
  2. Ask the assemblyperson if she/he is willing to co-author Resolution AJR36, the resolution to bring home our California National Guard.
    1. If "YES" they will co-author or will vote for the resolution, thank them & email the information to Adrienne@bayareacodepink.org
    2. If she/he is not decided, state 3 reasons to co-author:
      1. California has the MOST Iraq war casualties with 25% of the dead National Guard;
      2. Katrina is a wake-up call - we need our guard here to care for Californians which is their job; and
      3. our guard is being drafted into an illegal & immoral war - never in the history of all our wars have we used our guard to this extent (download talking points & National Guard Fact Sheets plus other information from Action Alerts Page)
  3. Ask when would be a good time to call back to get her/his decision.
  4. Call back again and ask if the assembly person again if she/he is willing to co-author AJR36.
  5. If not, request a meeting before the end of that month with the assemblyperson.

Again, some may say they will vote for it but not co-author. That is still vry important to the campaign and helpful to Loni. Let us know your results - call 510-524-2776 or email Adrienne@bayareacodepink.org

The following is a list those reputedly "progressive" Bay Area Democratic Assembly members who have NOT yet signed on. If you are from any of their districts, or if you know anyone in their districts, will you please call their offices, or get your friends from those districts to call?

Need coaching? Review the wealth of information on the Bay Area CodePINK websites.

If you need more information or assistance, email info@bayareacodepink.org or call 510-524-2776 and we'll get it for you.

If your Assemblyperson is not on this list, and is not a co-author, call them as well. Go to http://www.assembly.ca.gov/acs/acsframeset7text.htm for easy access (click on bio across from their name & get all their info!) Remember, it only takes five calls to get their attention! LET US know who you're calling!

The Assembly members can be reached in their district offices now, but keep this list to use later as well, when they return to Sacramento in January.

SAVE THE DATE:January 16th - Call in PINK, join us in Sacramento, and let Schwarzenegger know we expect his signature on AJR36 before we return home!

Thanks for your help. Write back with your results, positive and negative. We know this works, and it's time to put the heat on once again!
