State Democrats once again fail Californians, Mothers, National Guard, and Iraqis!

Our State Legislators had the opportunity to be the first state in the nation to call for the return of our California National Guard from Iraq. Since last August, 2005, when Assembly Member Loni Hancock agreed to author AJR36, the Assembly and then the Senate could have voted in congruence with the blue state they represent – yet they have failed, not only to vote on the resolution but to even allow it to go forward out of committee.

After a whole year of procrastinating and managing to never have the time, energy, resources to vote on AJR36, the resolution was finally permitted to go forward to the Committee on Veterans Affairs which held a hearing this last Wednesday, August 16th at our capitol building in Sacramento.

CodePINK was there in full strength, along with our powerful speakers and supporters from various other groups, including military families and candidates for state office. Over 50 people turned out in the middle of the day to show support for AJR 36.

When Committee Chair Joe Nation called the vote, it was a tie: 3 (Democrats) for, 3 (Republicans) against.

For:
Nation
Soldana
Evans

Against:
De Vore
Huff
Runner

Absent: (3 Democrats)
Canciamilla
Chavez
Oropeza

The resolution needed 5 YES votes to go to the floor of the Assembly for a vote. Chairperson Nation extended the time after the vote for about 15 minutes, giving the missing committee members time to report in and vote, but they never showed. Note: Chavez showed up briefly, then left well before the vote was called. The resolution was defeated. The chair then said the resolution could be reconsidered (no details at this time as to what that would entail.)
