Come to Berkeley, California for the Summer of Hope
July 4-July 31
The War STOPS HERE!

Berkeley has always been ahead of the rest of the country, leading the way to peace. From the Free Speech Movement in the sixties to Congresswoman Barbara Lee's lone vote against war to the City's rejection of the Iraq occupation in 2002 and its recent position against military recruiting, Berkeley stands strong for peace and spreads hope throughout the nation.

Starting on Independence Day (Friday, July 4th, 2008), Berkeley says the WAR STOPS HERE! We call on all activists and peace-loving people around the nation to bring determination, hope and strategies to Berkeley and our month-long Summer of Hope.

Take this stand with Berkeley. Tell our nation, the presidential candidates, the world we will not tolerate another moment of war!

Gather for direct actions, inspiring series of concerts, spoken word, teach-ins, activist trainings and strategy sessions focused on creating peace, justice and sustainability and ending war NOW.

The Summer of Hope will celebrate Berkeley's long tradition of being a City for Peace. Based in Martin Luther King Jr. Park with actions and events throughout the city, Summer of Hope will bring together many of the nation's best artists, experts and social justice activists.

Picture this: Hundreds of students, teachers, parents, artists…. pitching tents in MLK Park, converging on the progressive city…. a giant stage set up to host hip-hop, folk, and rock musicians… direct actions to SHUT DOWN the marine recruiting station for the WHOLE MONTH… teach-ins, workshops, hourly strategizing to END WAR NOW! And….

Take a little Woodstock, a little Poor People's March on Washington, a little Burning Man, a little Turtle Women Drumming Rising, a whole lotta courage and anger (the daughters of hope), and determination the war STOPS HERE, and we'll create the Summer of Hope!

Grab your guitar, pack your tent, hop in the art car or the tour bus, bike or skate board! Just BE THERE!

Add your voice, your talent, your courage, your brilliance to this gathering and we WILL END WAR NOW!

With Berkeley under attack by pro-war forces for its strong stand to end war through ending recruitment of its youth to be the fodder for George Bush's oil war, the Summer of Hope will be an opportunity for peace-loving people throughout the nation to:

  • Stand with the city of Berkeley to support the core values of a city that seek alternatives to war;
  • Bond, network, and strategize with activists from around the country;
  • counter the pro-war boycott of Berkeley with a "buy-cott" campaign to support the new association Berkeley Businesses for Peace;
  • build a stronger peace movement that can hold accountable the presidential and congressional candidates during this election year.

Help promote this event throughout the country to all peace-loving folks including but not limited to: counter-recruitment activists; mothers, grandmothers, daughters; racial justice and equity groups; veterans, resisters, military families; peace organizations, environmental and social justice groups; spiritual and political organizations and individuals. And...
